Guillermo Sexo – Vivid Nights

June 5, 2010

Guillermo Sexo put out one of my favorite albums of 2008: the brilliant “Magic Lanterns.” Now they are back, with this equally if not more brilliant new lp, “Vivid Nights.”

Compared to its predecessor, “Vivid Nights” sounds a little sharper and a bit more focused. A little more punk and a little less prog, one might say. But the extra focus and energy serve the songs well, particularly on the standout tracks “Neon Lights,” “Crossbow 1,” and “Settle Down.” Plus for those of us who can’t do without at least one extended sonic freak-out, there’s the 7 1/2-minute penultimate track, “We’re Not Going Under.”

You can listen to “Neon Lights” on the band’s Myspace page, but since “Vivid Nights” is really an lp that must be listened to in its entirety, I would strongly recommend streaming it straight through at their bandcamp page instead.

There is a little bit of a lot of stuff in every one of Guillermo Sexo’s compositions — the best way I can think of summarizing it is to say that they sound a bit like what would happen if Dinosaur Jr remade their first album but with Kristen Hersh helping out on vocals. But, as “Vivid Nights” proves, they are also a band that have transcended their many influences and become a truly unique and creative force in the Boston rock scene.
